From there the protostar
Must find equilibrium
Between the gravity
Pulling in more atoms
And gas pressure
Pushing light and heat
Away from the center

Density of the protostar increases
As more atoms try to share
The same space
Gas pressure increases
As atomic collisions
And density increases

Protostars that cannot maintain
The balance of mass and pressure
Become brown dwarfs
And never reach star status

For successful protostars
Accretion ends once
The gas pressure reaches gravity
And resists the collapse
Of the nebula
This is equilibrium

Once a critical temperature
Is reached in the core
The protostar begins
Nuclear fusion

Once hydrogen
Gets fused into helium
In the core of the protostar
The main sequence begins
And gives birth to a star

The main sequence continues
So long as hydrogen burning

Once it runs out of hydrogen
The star begins burning helium
This causes the outer layers
To expand
Known as the red giant phase

The star gets bigger
But is less stable
Once out of helium
The last phase begins
Carbon burning

The star sheds its outer layers
Into a planetary nebula
Returning materials
Back to interstellar space
Gas, dust, and cosmic rays
From whence it came

Leaving behind
Only it’s core
A white dwarf
Where for trillions of years
It will burn away it’s energy
And become a black dwarf

Our star
The Sun
Will not end its main sequence
And become a red giant
Until approximately
5 billion years

Is the amount of time
It takes our star
The Sun
And as result our solar system
And planet Earth
To orbit our galaxy
The Milky Way
